Which One to Choose?


Painting and Powder Coating

Painting and powder coating are two activities developed in a shop which in any way starts with a liquid paint or a fine powder.

If it is a paint, a liquid paint, it is spread with power guns all over the surface of the metal with the purpose of sticking to it, forming a thin film with a desired thickness, and to cover all the surface of the product to be finished.

Powder coating on the other hand, starts with a specific powder dried paint, which is a mixture of resins and pigments, finely grounded and the process is practically the same.

But in this case, the specific powder is applied over the surface of the product to cover it with this powder, and then heat it briefly during 15, 30 or 60 minutes (depending on the product properties) in an oven so that the powder melts and flows together, forming a smooth, solid layer.

Paint or Powder Coating: the Differences

Even though both processes provide finishing, the main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form.

The difference between paint or powder coating lies in that with liquid paint you just have to get it into the oven for curing.

Once the paint is melt all over the product your job is to test the quality and thickness of the film just provided.

On the powder coating application thinks differ. Our purpose is getting the powder to stick, preferably in an even coat and it is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint.

On this case, we depends on electrostatic charges between the powder coating gun (which gives the particles a negative charge) and the surface of the product being painted (which has the positive charge).

Certainly, for this to happen the product to be painted has to be grounded and given a positive electrical current charge.

The differences in electrical positive and negative charges stimulate some attraction and the powder starts to stick to the surface of the product.

The difference between both process is that powder coated finishes are durable and highly resistant to peeling, chipping, and fading.

Think on about any object that can be given an electrostatic charge and you will find it has a potential for powder coating finish.

Paint powder coatings also can be made in almost any color and with varying degrees of shininess ranging from a high gloss to a dull, flat finish.

In addition, the process is quick, efficient, and environmentally friendly, producing no pollution or dangerous waste products.

There’s also no waiting for paint to dry. As soon as a powder coated piece comes out of the oven and cools down to the handling, it’s ready to be used.
