Powder Coating Aluminum in Austin, Texas

The Clue To Efficient Aluminum Powder Coating Finishing

Powder Coating With Amazing Finish

Powder coating aluminum have been a topic of great concern in almost any forum related to the powder coating industry.

At Austin Powder Coating Texas we have been doing it on a daily basis without any of the circumstances described on most of the informative forums.

And this posses a question concerning the procedures involved on powder coating aluminum.

We still don't understand why there are so many doubts concerning the processes of pre-treatment, pre-cleaning, preparation and applying the primer or final top powder coating colors to aluminum parts.

Is there a proper cleaning of aluminum parts? Is there any wrong preparation? Is there really a need of pre-heating?

Is there a proper cleaning of aluminum parts to start with?

Didn't we emphasized about pre-cleaning? We do a proper cleaning of aluminum parts!

Powder Coating Aluminum:
Observation Process

It is difficult to evaluate many doubts of the same case over and over.

As we understand, on the powder coating and painting process, everything start with preliminary observations over the part to be powder coated or painted.

Part observation helps to make a wise decision on the cleaning process that must be applied when you receive the part from the customer.

Have you evaluated the surface condition of the part given to you by the customer?

It is the most important step to be done within the aluminum powder coating pre-treatment process.

You must evidently check how does it look. In addition, you must understand under what kind of environment this part have been produced.

Visual observations is the first consideration. Your eyes concentrated over the product can easily give you an idea of how to start the powder coating aluminum process to deal with.

To ensure adhesion is only well done after good aluminum preparation! Good primer application before powdercoating; adhesion is only well done after good preparation!

Successful Aluminum Powder Coating Finish

We are not a school but we are here to describe everything. We have found easier finishing the aluminum parts using a process called powder coating aluminum without pre-heating.

Once finished, this process significantly enhances the appearance of the parts.

You must know that aluminum will quickly oxidize over time and, without the clear coating application, the aluminum will take on a dull look in contrast to the bright look the aluminum part has when it's new.

Once done and before packing, the aluminum finishing should look like this one! Or, Once done, the aluminum should look like this one! Packed and ready to shipping.

Aluminum Powder Coating Problems

Previous to aluminum powder coating everything we do gets sand blasted. There is no corrosion forming under the powder coating film, neither blistering and peeling.

When not done properly the blisters will show up around the screw areas and it will show all over. If you have covered those spots, eventually they will start to bubble and show lack of adhesion. This is a pre-finishing problem.

How We Deal With These Problems

If it is going to be used outdoors then aluminum parts must be chemically treated prior to powder coating and painting.

Give it a good chemical treatment such as fluoride bearing treatment and a reactive non-chrome final rinse.

Afterward, get clean rinse water and you're all set. The your final results will be amazing. In addition, it will be cheaper in the long run by less handling.

Aluminum products are often powder coated, especially wheels. Important to know is that some aluminum products are temperature sensitive, especially those that have temper or heat-treated properties.

It is a well-known fact that aluminum can loose those temper properties when heated above a predetermined threshold. It is referred as annealing.

How much the properties are affected depends upon the alloy of aluminum, the temper rating, the exposure temperature and the time the aluminum is exposed to that temperature.

Austin Powder Coating Aluminum:
The Finishing Process

One of the really unique things we often do with powder coating aluminum, especially on a one at a time basis is to coat the whole thing.

Then, selectively blow off the areas to be masked with a fine tipped air nozzle. we have used this method many times, and is a lot easier than picking off adhesive tape masks after curing.

At the end, you just blow down the whole aluminum part and re-coat. We emphasize though that it does require some practice or experience, but it sounds much harder than it is and the final product finishing looks amazing.
